Paignton Zoo launches immersive virtual safari experience

Step into the Sahara, swim with polar bears and explore the rainforest canopy – all without leaving Devon

A new virtual reality experience at Paignton Zoo will allow visitors to come face-to-face with wildlife from around the world.

Running from 26 July to 21 September, the VR installation features 360-degree video footage of animals in their natural habitats, including lions, polar bears and sloths. The project is delivered in partnership with Wild Immersion and uses real-life video rather than computer-generated images.

The experience, based at the zoo’s Info Hub near the Education Centre, will run daily in 15-minute slots. Each session features around ten minutes of immersive footage accompanied by natural soundscapes and a musical score. Groups are limited to 15 people.

John Gillett, Visitor Experience and Retail Supervisor at Paignton Zoo, said, “It's absolutely mind-blowing. One minute you're in Devon, the next you're in the savannah with lions, dwarf mongoose and herds of wildebeest. It's like nothing we've ever offered before.”

The zoo said the footage will rotate weekly, and the experience is fully accessible to wheelchair users. It is open to those aged six and over, and tickets cost £5 in addition to standard zoo admission.

Gillett added: “No doubt this is going to be hugely popular with regulars and tourists alike. We recommend booking tickets online in advance where possible. You could try your luck on the day at the Info Hub, but don't say we didn't warn you if it's sold out!”

An exclusive preview is scheduled for zoo members on Sunday 20 July, with ticket bookings going live this week.

The zoo said the aim is to complement its live exhibits with a digital experience that offers a different perspective on wildlife and conservation. A total of 24 sessions will take place each day, with 360 visitors able to take part.
