Torquay United and Torbay Hospital League of Friends have donated essential funding for local NHS staff.

During December, supporters of the football club bought raffle tickets to take part in an advent calendar draw - with prizes awarded every day up until Christmas Eve - and raised £685.

Roy Tuttle, chairman of the Torbay Hospital League of Friends, said: “The event was superb and we are delighted to be able match the money raised by Torquay United fans; doubling the amount to £1,370.

"When it comes to Covid-19, we know that NHS staff have had to look after patients in very difficult circumstances.”

The funding gives a welcome boost of wellbeing support for staff on the frontline and people in our care with Covid-19.

Paul Norrish, donations manager at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We are grateful to the Gulls and the Torbay Hospital League of Friends for shining a light on the much-needed appeal.

"The situation remains challenging, and our workforce is responding heroically.

"The Covid-19 appeal continues to support our organisation, and as we move forward will switch focus from responding to recovery.
