Schools in Devon still have time to sign up to the UK’s biggest inter-school walking, wheeling, scooting and cycling competition.
The Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel takes place 21 March-1 April and aims to highlight the benefits an active school run can have on children and young people’s physical and mental health, and the environment – as well as saving fuel costs for parents.
Local schools already signed up include The Castle Primary School and Two Moors Primary School, both in Tiverton.
In 2019, the competition helped parents to save an estimated £1.6million in petrol costs across the UK during the fortnight. Formerly known as the Sustrans Big Pedal, it has been running since 2010 and sees schools compete on each day of the challenge to make the most journeys by walking, wheeling, scooting and cycling.
Sarah Leeming, Sustrans Interim Director for South of England said: "Hundreds of thousands of pupils have risen to the challenge and embraced active travel each year.
“This is such a fun event for schools to take part in, and for pupils, their families, and staff to experience the many benefits of an active school run.
“More people choosing to walk, wheel or cycle for essential everyday journeys means fewer cars on the road, helping to ease congestion and reduce air pollution around the school gates.”
Sustrans is a charity that aims to make walking, wheeling and cycling easier, and is delivering the competition in partnership with Schwalbe.
The Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel is open to all primary and secondary schools in the UK, including SEN/ASN/ALN schools, with prizes to be won every day.
