Delicious desserts available all-year round

Residents of St Marychurch, Babbacombe and beyond can now look forward to delicious ice cream and dessert treats the whole year round.

Helen Langton swapped the classroom for an ice cream scoop, taking over the Scoopy Doo’s Ice Cream Parlour on Babbacombe, with amazing ice creams, milkshakes, desserts and more from summer to winter.

Working alongside Helen is her partner Matt, who is a part-time ambulance technician for emergency care and the duo actually helped to fund the acquisition of the business through the X-Emergency Services scheme.

“I was originally teaching at a secondary school in Ottery St Mary for around eight years and just decided for a complete life change,” said Helen. “I left with the plan of doing supply work but then Covid hit, and schools were shut.

“I took the opportunity to set up my own business and, because food is my thing, I was looking for something in the industry. Scoopy Doo’s Ice Cream Parlour became available and we just think it is a rough diamond, with loads of potential.

“We started managing in June because the sale was taking a while to go through and it would have been pointless taking over after the summer season. The sale was completed in mid-August, so it was a little bit of ‘try before you buy’.

“It has been a real learning curve but the local support has been brilliant, all the regulars have been fantastic and the summer did bring some crazy days. Things have calmed down a bit now and I honestly feel like I have the best job in the world.

“We had a brilliant Open Day, which included a competition to launch a new ice cream flavour and that was won by seven year-old Olivia with the ‘Blueberry Beach Hut’.

“The Cowlick Creamery in Dawlish are making some ice creams for us, so we can keep things really local. We want the business to be locally sourced and eco friendly.

“The plan for now is to remain open throughout the autumn and winter, introducing some new desserts for people to enjoy. The shop has never been open all-year round before and we can’t wait to try new things in the cooler months.”
