Cyclists off to Scotland in support of 'super vet' star

As if a 600-mile round-trip to the Lake District wasn't far enough a fortnight ago, a group of Mid-Devon Cycling Club fanatics will set off for Falkirk in Scotland this weekend, mainly to support 'super vet' star Robin Delve.

Several will compete in junior and veteran races, but they will also act as trackside 'service' and back-up for former World Masters champion Delve, who is leading the veteran over-60 class of the National Trophy Cyclo-Cross Series.

Delve, who includes beach sessions in his training routine, produced a masterclass in slippery conditions to beat 25 rivals at Milnthorpe, Cumbria, and cement his series leadership with three rounds to go.

Only 24 hours later, on the way home to Devon, he took in the West Midlands League meeting at Dudley and won there too.

Sisters Eva and Lauren Fox finished second in under-14 and under-12 races, while Martin Smith worked his way from 73rd on the grid to 15th in the vet/50 race.

They will try to repeat that long-distance 'double' this weekend, after more success at the latest round of the SWCX Series, which attracted 236 riders to Escot near Exeter last Saturday.

Former Mid-Devon CC member Pfeiffer Georgi pulled off the biggest win of her career when she lifted the UK National Road Race Championships at Lincoln.

Georgi (Team DSM), 21, delivered a decisive attack on the eighth and final ascent of Lincoln's cobbled Michaelgate climb and pulled clear of a select group of rivals.

Georgi's family originally hailed from Kingskerswell, but now live in Gloucestershire.
