Barrie Matthews, one of the Torbay Weekly’s digital subscribers, has lived on the east coast of Spain near Cartagena since 2004.

Along with his wife, Liz and their family, Barrie ran many establishments in Torquay, starting with the Shiphay Manor club in the 1960s, Mr Matts Club, Doodles nightclub, The Island Inn and many other bars and restaurants in Torquay.

They decided to sell on their last business, ‘Buddy’s Bistro’ to help them with their move to Spain.

Barrie said: “For almost 30 years we were proud to provide some of Torquay's most popular entertainment businesses. Even today my brother Colin is the owner of the Babbacombe Theatre.”

During the 1960s & 1970s, Barrie also played cricket for Torquay Cricket Club and captained them for a period. He also captained Devon County Cricket team for 12 years.

After arriving in Spain, Barrie was delighted to be able to play some games at The La Manga sports club and played for Spain's over-60s team in a tournament there.

He said: “Life in Spain during the last 17 years has been very good and we have made many friends with whom to enjoy our local restaurants and travel to various regions of the country.

"However, it's such a shame that for nearly two years now we've not been able to return to Torquay to see all of our family and friends.”
