Shiphay community walks and coffee mornings are open to everyone

Joseph Bulmer

This week’s Community Matters is by Nicola Shellard, community builder for Shiphay:

Good weather is finally upon us all. The sun is out, the temperatures are climbing – what is not to like!

What is more we have lots going on around the Bay it’s all very exciting.

I know about most of the things that are happening in Shiphay but if you want something closer to home, then get in touch with your community builder, a list of whom can be found on the Torbay Community Development Trust website.

Come and join us for our next Shiphay community walk.

We are meeting outside the Grand Hotel at 2pm on Tuesday, May 24. We will be walking a flat walk along the seafront to the site of the former Living Coasts.

We will be stopping for a 30-minute refreshment break at Below Decks café and then returning via the lower Rock Walk and Abbey Gardens to the Grand Hotel for 4pm.

Everyone is welcome and the the walk is free of charge – it’s a great way to get gentle exercise, have a chat and make new friends.

Also, to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the Shiphay Community Coffee Group is holding a cream tea in Kitson Park, Cadewell Lane, Shiphay, from 2pm to 4pm on bank holiday Thursday, June 2.

There will be limited seating so please bring along your own chair or blanket to sit on and a flask of tea.

Scones, jam, clotted cream and cold refreshments will be provided free of charge.

We have a singer popping along to entertain us. All welcome.

And for those of you who have yet to pop along to our community coffee mornings each Tuesday from 11am to 12.30pm at the Devon Dumpling, Shiphay Lane, please come along.

We have a good crowd of regulars now and a warm welcome awaits newcomers each week.

Coffee is subsidised by the pub for £2 a cup and biscuits are free.

The conversation is always flowing; we have a local man who tells us jokes and even sings for us all!

I will be there on Tuesday, May 17, so I hope to see you all there.
