College apprenticeship just the job for catering student Jake

Torbay Weekly

When catering apprentice Jake Moore finished school, he found himself at a crossroads, and opted for a pathway at South Devon College that has given him a brand new career journey.
Jake signed up for an apprenticeship in Catering Supervisory and Management, developing his skills every day with his work at one of the outlets based on the College campus.
“I was encouraged to start an apprenticeship with South Devon College because I’d recently left school and could not find a job anywhere,” said Jake.
“I was interested in improving my skills and experiencing a new workplace. What I like about the apprenticeship is that it is really full-on and there are a lot of challenges you need to overcome.
“I’ve been supported really well throughout my apprenticeship, my tutor and my management have been really approachable if I’ve had any enquiries about anything I was struggling with.
“Sustainability in my role comes from seeing lots of various students coming in, who are starting new courses, taking a year out or just coming back for evening courses, it means we always have a good turnover and fresh faces.
“In my department, we encourage customers to use our recyclable paper cups, which increases sustainability.
“My job role allows me to speak with a lot of different customers, different age groups and it’s nice to meet new people, and to chat with them. I’m generally not a very sociable person, so it’s nice to open up and feel friendly within the College.
“I’ve been on this apprenticeship programme for 12 months and the course involves practical lessons, theory lessons and job training. There is also research outside of work hours.
“After the gateway, we will present a special project to be observed by the tutor and this qualification has given me a stepping stone into more advanced management.
“I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship because it’s nice to improve your skills, alongside still earning an income for your work.”
It is a journey that has only just begun for Jake and there are so many apprenticeship opportunities in the hospitality industry – visit for more information.
