Christmas has arrived in Torquay.
The town's festive lights have been switched on with MP Kevin Foster and jeweller David Rowe doing the honours courtesy of a sparkly wand.
The wand officially lit up the 'Welcome' sign at the top end of Union Street where Mr Rowe has traded for 50 years and where his ship was suitably adorned in Christmas decorations.
Mr Rowe hosted a reception for guests and members of the Torquay Town Centre Partnership who helped raise money for the lights with its street market.
The Christmas lights also mark the start of this year’s outdoor Christmas Market that will have up to 30 different stalls and will run three days a week up until December 16. Then it will run all week through until Christmas. Santa has also arrived at his Fleet Walk grotto.
Mr Foster said: “It is very good that once again the TTCP will be promoting a Christmas spirit and encouraging trade within the Town with Christmas Lights and a Christmas Market.”
Steve Holdup, of Christmas lights company Torbay Display and manager of the street and now Christmas market in the town, said: “All went well with the switch on of the lights as did the opening of the Fleet Walk Charity Father Christmas Grotto which was fully booked for our first weekend.
“The Town Market also has turned into a Christmas Market with all stall sites fully booked to Christmas itself and all decorated for the season. Shoppers certainly have a good choice with new stalls every week.”.
