Brixham mourn loss of stalwart Eric

Torbay Weekly

Brixham Rugby Club are mourning the loss of one of their true stalwarts - former player, coach and willing volunteer Eric Barnes.

Barnes played on the wing for the Fishermen throughout the Forties and Fifties. He then went on to become an inspiring coach to many Astley Park Colts after he finished playing and, with several members of his family, was always quick to help the club in any capacity.

After the season's final 'break', Brixham resume their Tribute South-West Premier campaign at home to Ivybridge on Saturday.

There was local Western Counties West Division action last weekend, and Newton Abbot were the big winners of the derby against Teignmouth.

The All Whites continued their storming run up the table with a 37-19 win at Bitton Park. It was Newton's ninth win in eleven games, carrying them over Chard and into fourth place.

Newton, who are now only three points behind Truro (3rd), have another key game this Saturday - against Chard in Somerset.

Paignton's trip to Cornwall ended in a 36-22 defeat at Penryn, where Jack Linley-Shaw and Harry Law scored tries, with Olly Latto converting one and Ross Edwards kicking a dropped goal.

It will be tough for Paignton and Teignmouth this Saturday - Paignton travel to Burnham-on-Sea (2nd), while Teignmouth face the big challenge of a trip away to leaders Wadebridge Camels.

Torquay Athletic Colts, including recent first team debutant Lewis Crocker, entertained the Recreation Ground faithful with a hard-fought 17-12 win over Tavistock.

Fly half Crocker may well keep his place when the 1st XV resume away to title-chasing Topsham on Saturday.

The Devon One championship could be settled when leaders New Cross meet third-placed Exeter Saracens away, but there's also a 'Well Done' to struggling Buckfastleigh Ramblers.

The Ramblers won for the first time this season, 21-17 at Dartmouth, hauling themselves off the bottom of the table with a brave and determined display, while Salcombe beat Totnes 19-17.

Other games this Saturday are: Devon One - Buckfastleigh v Plymouth Argaum, Old Technicians (Plymouth) v Dartmouth, Torrington v Salcombe.
