Brixham Baptist Church became the third Baptist church in recent weeks to invite a new minister to the area.

Darrell Holmes was welcomed as their new pastor at a service that included church and community friends and dignitaries from far and wide.

Previously Darrell has served over a period of 26 years in churches in inner-city London, inner-city Birmingham and rural East Devon before arriving to live and work in Brixham.

He is married to Lucy, who now works with the National Trust at Coleton Fishacre, and they have three children - Jed, 21, works in Exeter as a sound engineer, Jessie, 18, has just started a one-year course at Falmouth Marine School and Juliana, aged nine, has settled in a local Brixham primary school.

Chris Forster, Brixham Baptist Church secretary, said: “Darrell and his family arrive at a very exciting time in the life of the church and community.

"We found ways to do things differently as a church through lockdown, taking our services online, and supporting our link children, youth and families remotely and online.

"As Covid restrictions lift we are excited to see people of all ages return to our services and midweek activities just as Darrell commences his time with us.

"The volunteer-run church coffee shop The Front Room reopened in September as a place to meet, drink, eat and chat.

"Activities for children and families have also recommenced at the church and there is a buzz in the air as the community start to come back into the building."

Darrell said: “Having moved from a village of 850 people where there was a close sense of connection between church and community, I have been delighted by the welcome of many people and churches in this vibrant town.

"As a church we will explore ways to go on serving the community online and onsite, whether they are people of faith or not, using our building as a community resource.

"I’d love to meet folk from the area to understand the joys and challenges of local life, and can be visited at The Front Room or am happy to come and visit them in local homes and businesses."
