Betty celebrates birthday number 104 in favourite Brixham venue

The wonderful Betty Pratt has celebrated turning 104 with tea, cake and treats at her favourite Brixham hangout, the fabulous Miss Jones’ café on Bolton Street.

Ironically. Betty actually hails from Bolton in Lancashire, moving down to Brixham in 1975 and she immediately fell in love with the South Devon scenery, gardens and lifestyle.

Betty’s great friend Eileen Hume described how Betty has become a hugely popular figure in Brixham, spending time at her beloved church and also reminiscing over her career in fashion.

“Betty and I are both Lancashire lasses,” said Eileen. “Betty came down with her husband but has sadly been twice widowed. She also lived in the Midlands for a long time. She has a son and grandchildren, who still live in the Midlands

“Betty turned 104 on February 7th and is a long-time member of Brixham Methodist Church in Fore Street. She loves her church life and also very much enjoys being around beautiful gardens, flowers and plants.

“Before retirement, Betty was the chief buyer for ladies’ clothes at Rossiters in Palace Avenue, Paignton. If you saw her wardrobe, she has the most beautiful clothes.

“Betty used to love cruising around the world with her second husband Geoff, who was a local preacher. She loves being around people, all her marbles are in place and she still does all her own cleaning and cooking.

“It was a pleasure for all of us to celebrate Betty’s birthday at Miss Jones.”

Helen Jones from Miss Jones’ café, added: “Betty has been visiting us for a few years and we were delighted to host her birthday party.”

Betty Pratt was born in 1918, when World War I still had nine more months of trauma and tragedy before the November Armistice. She was in her 20s during World War II and Betty has lived through every up and down in the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. She was born in the same year as comedian Spike Milligan and South African leader Nelson Mandela.

Congratulations Betty and a belated happy birthday from everyone in Torbay.
