In Torbay everybody should be treated as being equal. That is why Torbay Council wants residents to have their say on its 'Equality Objectives'.
June has been Pride Month and an opportunity to celebrate diversity. The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Pride Month is currently celebrated each year during June to honour the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan.
Sexual orientation and gender reassignment are just two of the protected characteristics under the Public Sector Equality Duty, with the others being age, disability, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief and sex.
The council is reviewing its Equality Objectives and wants to hear from residents.
Cllr Christine Carter, Cabinet Member for Corporate and Community Services, said: “We are absolutely committed to respecting equality and diversity."
Cllr Jermaine Atiya-Alla who is leading the Torbay Racism Review said: “In addition to this new consultation, once we get the recommendations from the ongoing Torbay Racism Review, they will be considered as part of the Equality Objectives."
Torbay's objectives include:
1, Ensure a wide range of voices are reached and heard in decision making and designing and delivering services.
* Ensure all relevant groups are included in consultations
* Improve the accessibility of events, meetings, information and communications
* Strengthen the relationship with the community.
2, Reducing inequalities so residents thrive. Delivering the Community and Corporate Plan ambition the council will work to:
•Ensure that all children are given the best start in life and families are supported
•Tackle lifestyle and economic issues.
•Ensure that older people age well and are physically, mentally and socially active.
3, Consider and if approved implement the recommendations from the Torbay Racism Review Panel
* Maintain a legacy of the review
* Strengthen engagement networks
4, Supporting the diverse needs of the workforce
* Demonstrating our Core Values to always be approachable, calm and respectful.
* Create an environment to act professionally and treat everyone with respect.
•Ensure that policies and initiatives are in place so staff can feel safe at work and carry out their duties without feeling bullied or discriminated against.
