A brilliant day at the South West Schools Championships at the Exeter Arena on Saturday saw a group of Torbay youngsters displaying their athletic potential in elite company.
The 8 Torbay Athletic club juniors, who were selected to represent Devon schools from the previous week’s Devon Schools champs, performed brilliantly on the day. The Torbay eight collected six South West Schools’ titles between them, plus another two podium placings. A fantastic achievement from the club’s contingent and a demonstration of the bright future ahead.
First year junior girl Keeley Little placed third in the 100m with a strong surge over the final 25m to record 13.49, having run 13.17 earlier in the heat.
Training partner Olivia Hayes, won the Inter girls 100m in dominating style with a time of 12.72 after recording 12.70 in winning her heat. Later, with tired legs, Olivia placed 2nd in the 200m in 26.73.
At senior girl level, Estelle Roots completed the double, taking the 100m in 12.29 – inside the English schools entry time, and the 200m in 26.28. Tom Ward contested the junior boys 300m, running with great determination to record a Personal best in his heat 39.55, and another PB in the final to place 4th with 39.02.
Josh Taylor won the 100m hurdles with some silky smooth hurdling in 14.06, while Aaron Smith won the junior boys 80m hurdles title in 12.91
Holly Leman-Liberal placed 6th in the senior girls 1500m in 5:26.73. Last to compete was Georgina Scoot in the senior girls Triple jump as the weather deteriorated, Georgie won with a great jump of 12.46m, setting a new championship best performance, achieving the entry standard to the English schools champs, where she will be one of the favourites to win.
Georgie represented Great Britain under 20 last month and is currently ranked number 1 in the UK. Amongst the Devon team of 40 selected to compete at Manchester in the English schools champs in July are four members from the club, Estelle 100m, Georgina triple, Josh 100m hurdles, Aaron triple. Good luck to all.
