Bay asked to unite in 'Festive Food Appeal'

Torbay Weekly

The Torbay Weekly is launching a special appeal to make sure nobody goes hungry this Christmas.

We have teamed up with the Torbay Food Alliance In a ‘Festive Food Appeal’ to encourage our local residents to once again unite, come to the fore and donate food for the needy and vulnerable.

The Food Alliance was set up at the beginning of Covid during the first lockdown and has provided more than 570,000 meals – about around 7,000 a week with an average cost of 83p each.

With raising food prices, removal of the Universal Credit top-up and furlough and the increase in domestic fuel costs, more people are having to turn to Food Banks, especially at Christmas.

Referral numbers to the Community Help Line is steadily increasing and there doesn’t seem to be any foreseeable halt in this trend.

This has shown an increase in the number of families that are having to rely on support from Food Banks to feed themselves and their children.

There are 10 members in the Alliance and they work collaboratively together with the same creed – helping people in food poverty.

Some of the Alliance members run other services and activities ranging from ‘Snack and Natter’, Meet, Cook, Eat and as well as Benefit and employment support. They create an atmosphere to enable new friendships and overcome isolation.

From time to time some of the Alliance members need to recruit more volunteers particularly drivers for food parcel deliveries.

A big thanks to the regular donators from everyone from the Food Alliance.

Here are the groups and places you can donate food:

Lynne, a Foodbank user, said: “The support from Paignton Community Larder has been overwhelming. Not only with food for my family, but listening and helping me to engage with other services. I don’t know what we would have done without their support.

Andy Bichard said: “I have been privileged to have been part of the Torbay Food Alliance from the its inception in 2020, initially at Torquay Community Larder and now at Paignton Community Larder. The willingness to work together, share resources and ideas has created longstanding relationships that ultimately benefit all those who come to us in need of provision. It shows what can be achieved when likeminded people who have a genuine love for people can achieve when united in common purpose.”
