This week, Jacquie Phare, System Director for Nursing and Professional Practice at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, talks about the work she is currently undertaking to understand what matters most to local people regarding health and care services.
I have been privileged to work in the NHS for over forty years and am extremely fortunate to have worked for much of my career in general practice, so I recognise the importance of services being designed to meet local communities’ needs.
In my current role, I lead on a number of different areas, including patient/service-user experience of our health and care services across Torbay and South Devon.
As a large healthcare organisation, we provide joined-up care across our community, delivering acute services from Torbay Hospital and community-based health and social care, in people’s homes and across a wide range of community sites, including four community hospitals. Our vision is for better health and care for all.
We care for a large amount of people, around 500,000 face-to-face contacts with patients in their homes and communities each year, and we see over 78,000 people in our A&E department annually. We serve a population of approximately 286,000 people, and approximately 100,000 visitors at any one time during the summer holiday season.
In order to support the people of Torbay and South Devon to live well, we passionately believe the best way to care for people is by focusing on what matters to them, putting them at the centre of everything we do, and integrating services around them. We want to ensure that the decisions we make about services consider the views of our communities, patients and carers.
In the spirit of what matters to me, we really want to make sure that we hear the voice of local people in everything that we do. To achieve this, we have been working in partnership with Healthwatch Devon and Torbay to:
• understand what matters to our local population in relation to health and care services.
• hear from our communities and ask them to help us shape and co-design our plans.
• plan services that are fit for today and the future.
We would now like to hear what matters most to you to see if we can improve your experience of the health and care services we provide. Your feedback will help inform us about the services we provide and enable us to focus on enhancing our services to improve the experience for you, your family and loved ones.
Please take the time to complete a short survey available online at Torbay & South Devon NHS Foundation Trust Feedback Survey - Healthwatch Torbay or by requesting a paper copy from https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/TSDFTServices (online and paper surveys are available in easy read versions). The survey is open until 5pm on Friday, 11 March, 2022.
I do hope you take the time to share your experience, it is so important that we understand what matters to you.
